On 18 July 2019, the Mikhulu Trust took part in the Mandela day programme hosted by Sikhula Sonke. This community celebration took place in Mew Way in Khayelitsha.
Educare teachers and Sikhula Sonke Facilitators enjoying themselves doing ECD activities with local children. These included morning ring activities outside and paintings inside. The Mikhulu Trust had an opportunity to talk to parents about our work. Phumza Gqwaka briefly introduced the organisation and talked about our partnership with Sikhula Sonke. She also introduced book-sharing and afterwards asked parents a few questions, rewarding those who answered with some of our books. The parents were excited to hear about the book-sharing.
The event also celebrated the opening a new community centre sponsored by Home Choice and Bread Life. Community leaders, ward councillors and parents joined the celebration. The structure was dedicated to the community and made open to use for important activities, like youth clubs. The spokesperson from Home Choice encouraged the community to take care of the structure as it is theirs and for the children. Mr Mdebuka also encouraged the community to find a way to place a fence around the building. Sikhula Sonke will also help to secure the community centre.
