The Mikhulu Child Development Trust has partnered with Nal’ibali, Macmillan Publishers and the Sunshine Association in an early literacy campaign called the Siyafunda Community Learning Hubs Project. Made possible through funding by USAID, the focus is on nurturing the early literacy foundations of very young children in the uMgungundlovu District of KZN and will strive to improve the early learning outcomes and school readiness of children from the local communities, setting them up well for when they learn to read and write at school. The activities will focus on supporting families, early childhood educators and other community members who engage with young children.
The Siyafunda Community Learning Hubs Project aims to empower and build confidence in book-sharing with caregivers within their own homes and promote young children’s literacy learning. It also promotes learning through play with parents, caregivers and Early Childhood practitioners using wordless picture books to improve school readiness.
A ‘dialogic book-sharing’ manual has been developed by the Mikhulu Trust which aims to guide and support the Story Sparkers as they introduce parents, caregivers and ECD Centres to book-sharing by providing structure and content for each of the book-sharing home visits they will conduct.
A central WhatsApp number has been established which will be used to support groups of parents and caregivers once the book-sharing training is completed and home visits have begun.
